As featured in the May/June issue of Bend Magazine, this 1979 ranch in Bend, OR was remodeled for a modern family but still has hints of the 70s including oak, shag rugs, geometric patterns, earth tones...and of course, velvet. Scandinavian and boho influences help the 70s touches feel modern.

A color that never goes out of style and looks great with almost anything, black is a great choice for accents and bold statements. You can see how black is used as a foundation and an accent color in the following exterior and interior photos.

Copper is typically found on more traditional homes, but here it shines like a modern jewel.

Kitchen

Kitchen

We kept the original footprint from the 1979 kitchen but made some tweaks to make it more functional. Several walls closing in the kitchen came down, and so did the saloon doors and fluorescent lights.

Coffee and Tea Station

Coffee and Tea Station

A home for coffee, knives, a KitchenAid mixer, and even compost was designated before demo began. A welcome purging of unused items and an intentional inventory of what was left allowed this kitchen to be hyper-organized and clutter-free.

Art is often a final touch added to a space—but not here—art took first priority The design choices in this remodel were centered around an eclectic art collection. Art influenced furniture placement, the color palette and overall style.

Main Bedroom

Main Bedroom

The original main suite wasn’t huge, so we borrowed some space from a hall coat closet to create a more functional suite that’s still small but mighty.

Main Bathroom

Main Bathroom

The original shower was like one you’d find in a cruise ship cabin. now this bathroom accommodates two people comfortably.

Guest Room

Guest Room

Remember when we hosted guests? Before the pandemic, this family hosted out-of-town guests every month (that’s what happens when you move to Bend). The guest room is small, so we kept it simple but welcoming. Now it sits lonely, waiting for the day guests can safely return.

Multipurpose Room

Multipurpose Room

Before a major remodel, this space was a mishmash of furniture and a dumping ground for random stuff. Specific zones for work/school, play, guests and books were created to make this room a daily hub that can easily transition from one activity to the next.

Laundry and Mudroom

Laundry and Mudroom

The original space had too much going on: laundry, pantry, utility room, office space, and storage room. We created zones to help streamline the space. Now it has three main functions: a laundry, a mudroom, and a cozy place to read with plants.

Powder Bathroom

Powder Bathroom

The original tiny powder room was crammed with a full-size vanity and toilet so the door couldn’t open all the way. We sourced smaller fixtures to allow more space and then packed a punch with statement wallpaper.
